A former semi-professional soccer player from Colombia, John is trilingual in English, French & Spanish & also teaches Salsa & Merengue. John has guest lectured at Mount Royal University on the topic of Invasion Games from 2015 to present. Acting on his desire to ‘give back’ to youth, John created “Soccer Dreams”: collecting sports equipment & shipping it to Colombia, Venezuela, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Kenya, Guatemala, Salvador & Cuba. He also delivered player & coach development clinics in several of these countries.
Consistently recognized as an inspirational coach who teaches life skills through sport, one whom engages minds & stimulates technical excellence via ‘sports homework’, John received the Alberta Soccer Association ‘Coach of the Year’ Award in 2001 – the culmination of two years of training his U18 girls which resulted in a National Championship.
Cochrane Minor Soccer recruited John to take over as their Technical Director as of January 2015. CMS was attracted to John’s belief in the LTAD plan, his reputation of strongly advocating for positive/respectful coaching, as well as his ongoing pursuit of knowledge. John continually pursues the ‘Holy Grail of Coaching’ (how to teach without teaching) using unique “games to teach the game”, his CPS Coaching Philosophy & the “Matrix of Creativity” through his private coaching & CPS Sports business. An NCCP Master Learning Facilitator, CMS is the benefactor by gaining required coaching certification in-house, as well as additional workshops for coaches & parents. As a life-long learner, John continues to be driven to seek additional ways to connect with the players & the game, develop independent & imaginative athletes & to enlighten coaches & parents along the process! He is especially proud of all of his grown children; his daughter is a nurse and his sons graduated as Medical Techs in the Canadian Military.
