Dr. Joan Vickers – The Quiet Eye
Posted by Dean Holden at February 25th, 2012
As a former student and then research assistant of Joan, she was the first major ‘agent of change’ in my coaching philosophy in the early 1990’s and I didn’t even recognize it at the time! Since ‘evolving’, I go back and read her articles and books to continue to learn more. I bumped into her at a Chapter’s before Christmas and we got caught up. She has been working a lot more with eye movement studies the past 15 years and as this video shows, some application from sport to ‘real life’.
If you do a search for her name and the quiet eye / eye movements / gaze control, etc, you will find many articles that might be of interest. I HIGHLY RECCOMEND her pamphlet, “Decision Training: A new approach to coaching” ISBN # 978-0-88953-242-7 approximate cost of $13.95 and might be found through the U of Calgary bookstore or Coaches Association of BC. John Castrillon and I base much of our coaching methodology on this work.
I purchased her latest book, “Perception, Cognition, and Decision Training:The Quiet Eye in Action”, released in 2007. It is science based, but a fascinating read for a coaching geek like me!
